Citizens of Alfred was founded in the early spring of 2025 when abutters to the proposed quarry site were notified. Within a matter of days, a handful of neighbors rallied friends and family to knock on doors, spread the word and sign a petition to request the project approval be slowed down. (We gathered 185 signatures in 2 days!). Over 100 people showed up for the first public hearing and that’s when Citizens of Alfred crystallized into a cohesive group and we knew we had the backing of the majority of Alfred residents.
Our goal is to first stop a quarry from being approved in a residential area. We aim to fight this present proposal with data and science, advocacy and diligence, ultimately working to change Alfred’s ordinances to better reflect the character of its natural beauty, rural lifestyle and healthy environment.
Citizens of Alfred core group are long standing residents of the town. We are neighbors, parents, generational farmers and good stewards of the earth. We are citizen scientists, school board members, legal experts, therapists and activists. We care about the environment, about our quality of life and the way a rural residential community should look and sound like. We care about the health and well being of all of the residents and are speaking out for everyone.
