We’re working to stop a massive quarry from being developed in our rural residential community in Alfred, Maine.
We’re fighting to protect the environment and rural way of life for our town and the southern Maine region.
We’re advocating for positive change via research and education about the effects of large industrial activities on people’s way of life and the short and long term benefits of protecting and advancing environmental justice.
We’re educating our communities- local officials, citizens of Alfred and surrounding communities about the impact a quarry has on the land and people.
Actions.
With our team of engineers, hydrologists, citizen scientists and legal professionals, we are challenging the inaccurate and predatory proposal the applicant (GSG) has put before our town. We have submitted rebuttal reports for every element of GSG’s application. We have filed appeals to the Zoning Board of Appeals and stood up at each public hearing.
We have produced a document that encapsulates the main issues and reasons our town officials should not approve this quarry application. REASONS TO DENY
Additionally, our COA team produced hundreds of pages of researched data on air, water, noise, silica and the medical impacts, property value destruction, and fly rock. Some of the COA reports are available on our media page. If you are interested in reading more, all the reports are available to the public at Alfred town hall and by request at our COA email.
On the state level, our team has called, written letters and attended public hearings on this quarry proposal. Our aim is to force the State of Maine to take notice and to not approve this application because it “meets the standards” but rather to do a site visit, read the submissions from GSG with an open mind and recognize that there are many reasons to deny this project.
This is what we are trying to prevent from happening to our forested rural residential land.
We want to respectfully acknowledge that Shaw Brothers (SB) is a different company but both SB and the applicant (GSG) run similar business models.
They quarry. They blast. Once they begin, they don't stop.
Our friends at the Gorham Community Alliance: Quarry Impact on Health and Safety have been struggling with SB for decades. They are currently trying to stop further quarry expansions. SB want to expand an additional 6 acres and citizens have expressed concerns about safety, including- how roads are sometimes shut down during blasting and the expansive dust from blasting, SB operating before 7am and the resulting noise, lack of support from the town and overall poor enforcement of potential land use violations.
Gorham Community Alliance members have supported us at our meetings and have kindly given permission for us to use their photographs to show how our community, environment and lives would be impacted by an industrial quarry. We are grateful for their support.
